ELCA World Hunger

Faith, Food, and Farming Discussed at ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering

"Faith, Food, and Farming." This was the theme of the 2012 ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering in Ft. Meyers, FL in February. Saint Paul Area Synod representatives Lois and Richard Wintersteen were among the 85 hunger leaders from 53 synods who gathered for networking, learning, worship, and reflection.

Giving the Farm, Literally

I recently attended the ELCA Region 3 Annual Hunger Retreat and learned that one congregation in our region contributed an average of $125 per baptized member to the ELCA World Hunger program last year. Yes, you read that right--$125 per baptized member! We all, as you might imagine, gasped loudly (the goal is a mere $3 per baptized member). And we wondered how that could be possible in our own congregations.

True "Global" Efforts

I have visited congregations which use world globes of some sort to receive the offerings of children during Sunday morning worship. These provide some very important visual clues for young people as well as making them feel that they are returning God’s gifts in a way that is uniquely theirs, not just putting their parents’ offering envelope into the plate as it passes by.

Galilee Lutheran on Rice Street in Roseville is not a large congregation but one with a good understanding of the big picture of what it means to be a part of God’s world.
