Hunger

Hunger, Happiness and Lent

Do these three things seem to go together? Or do we sometimes feel that “happiness” somehow doesn’t fit into a season in our church that calls for more somber thought, more reminders of our need to honor Jesus’ suffering, and urges taking a step back in quietness.

Lutheran World Relief offers wonderful new hunger resources

Lutheran World Relief has just produced a wonderful new resource. The kit is titled "LWR Sunday Kit: Hunger" and could certainly be used to promote any of the programs of LWR in which congregations are already involved as well as encouraging new ventures.

Thoughts about "school tools"

Advertisements for school clothes and supplies seem to come earlier each year much like every kind of holiday decoration.   Perhaps your congregation is like mine and donations of “school tools” are being requested for local food shelves, shelters, and those in need in school districts.  What comes to mind when you hear “school tools”?  Has your list changed in the past few years?

‘Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…’

This song from the musical “Porgy and Bess” keeps running through my mind as we are in the midst of a warmer than usual summer in Minnesota. It’s true for me—my schedule is not as crowded with meetings and activities; we eat lighter; I have more time to catch up with my reading; and we manage to take “days away” now and then.

Water, Water Everywhere...But...

Did you learn that old saying “Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink” when you were a child? I did but can’t remember what I thought it meant. Today I have other ideas about water--where it is, who “owns” it, who has access, how safe and clean it is, and who needs it. Today there are 1 billion of God’s children in our world (that’s one out of seven) who lack access to clean, safe water. Most of them walk an average of three miles each day to get water, often water that is not clean and safe. Millions of people, especially children, die each year from water-related illness. Water-related illness is the second leading cause of child mortality in the world today.

Domestic Hunger Grants

Each year, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) distributes domestic hunger grants to hunger ministries around the United States. Ministries are invited to apply for grant monies, but the application deadline is coming up quick! If your congregation or organization is involved in hunger ministry, complete the online application by Monday, July 9 to be considered in the 2013 grant distribution.
