Fall Ministerium

Thu, 11/08/2012 - 8:30am

Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, St. Paul. This year's fall ministerium, "Reforming the Church: Mission and Ministry in an Age of Limits," focuses on missional priorities with reduced capacity. How can recognizing our limitations open in our congregations a new creation? When all is said and done, how can we enter into these times knowing that the Spirit may well be birthing something very good among us? Discussion will be led by Peter Rogness.  More information can be found on the Ministeriums event page.

From the Ministerium: Thomas and a DQ Cone

dq cone
The controlling image for today’s sermon came to me from a TV ad I spotted last week. You’re never going to get this in a preaching class, but here goes. The weather is getting warmer, Dairy Queen is starting to run its ads, and there it was—a close-up of a nice sugar cone, held under the dispenser, soft ice-cream filling it up, one-two-three globs, then that nice little twist at the top without which a DQ cone wouldn’t be a DQ cone at all.

The Way It Looks from Here: Holy Week 2012

Easter lily
One of the jarring adjustments when I moved from the parish to a synod office was the pace during Holy Week. Even in the small city parish I served in Milwaukee, Holy Week meant four or five distinct service preparations and sermons, checking in with those planning the Easter breakfast and preparing for the services and events, communing the shut-ins--and the list has a myriad of sub-points.
