Fall Stewardship Series: Fanning the Flames of Mission

Welcoming the stranger at Ifunda

Image:
One Sunday morning in Tanzania I traveled with my wife, Beth, and the Rev. Msigwa to the Ifunda Parish for worship. A short ride from Iringa, it is a thriving congregation with good leaders and fantastic choirs. I was to preach two services, translated by Pastor Msigwa. As I sat down and surveyed the faithful before us, I couldn’t help but notice a young man in the front pew. He wore a yellow shirt with an American flag-print tie and had a generous and engaging smile. On the floor next to him was a pair of crutches. Polio, he later told us, stunted the development of his legs. Both legs were twisted and underdeveloped, yet, somehow, with those crutches he was able to get around.

Jump Start Your Stewardship

Sat, 04/21/2012 - 8:30am

Congregational leaders, stewardship teams, and treasurers are invited to get a jump start on planning their congregation's stewardship campaigns for the next program year. Spend time with synod bishops, hear insightful keynotes by Philip and Janet Jamieson, co-authors of Ministry and Money: A Practical Guide for Pastors, and attend two workshops. More

True "Global" Efforts

I have visited congregations which use world globes of some sort to receive the offerings of children during Sunday morning worship. These provide some very important visual clues for young people as well as making them feel that they are returning God’s gifts in a way that is uniquely theirs, not just putting their parents’ offering envelope into the plate as it passes by.

Galilee Lutheran on Rice Street in Roseville is not a large congregation but one with a good understanding of the big picture of what it means to be a part of God’s world.
